Treats for appetites of every size
It was cold outside this morning. I was out for a walk with my mom, and definitely could have used a sweater. With September only five days away, it felt like Fall was trying to make itself known. And with the first years starting school this week, I’m definitely leaning towards a Fall frame of mind. However, it is still August, and I did spend a good amount of my afternoon napping in the sun. So I also wanted to carry on my summer recipes for at least a few more weeks.
I learned so many things yesterday. First, baking bread when your kitchen is over 80° is destined to be a disaster. Rather than rise up, the bread spreads out, and then you have flat sourdough, which is really only good to be cut up into crostini. Second, my apron has pockets, which means that when I discovered this and started storing my phone in one, I spent far too much time searching the counter for said phone whenever I needed to take a picture. In this week’s baking adventure, I learned two things: (1) A popsicle mold would be a really great investment for the summer. (2) Popsicles are a hard thing to take flattering pictures of. Fortunately, though this may not be my best food photography, the end product is still a refreshing summer treat.
Vacation baking takes creativity. When you find yourself in a condo that lacks anything that could be construed as useful, you have to improvise.
It’s Labor Day weekend. Classes start on Tuesday. All signs are pointing to the end of summer. So, naturally, I had to squeeze out one more truly summer recipe before the invasion of pumpkin spice.
This week, SMiLes by Meg was in Philadelphia! Often, new kitchens can be frustrating to bake in (largely because I firmly believe where I keep things are the only places where those things belong), but this weekend’s kitchen was a dream.

This post starts with a new Saturday morning tradition. Last week was the first time we tried this, but since its been two weeks in a row, I’m calling it a tradition. I start a run from my parents’ new house and my mom starts to walk. I go out around to the beach and back, and it times out perfectly (like, arriving-at-the-door-at-the-exact-same-time perfectly) that we meet at the bakery we always used to go to from their old house.
